This is the third generation of the Apple iPod Nano, and the one we have on hand is the 8GB green-coloured variant. This time around the Nano plays your movies as well as the music.
DesignFirst thing you’ll notice about the iPod Nano is the substantial redesign, from the usual tall and slim design to the now smaller rectangular cube like design. The Nano sports a 2-inch LCD screen, which stands at 320 x 240-pixel resolution at 204 pixels per inch. The screen size has also increase in both width and length from previous models. Despite a somewhat radical design, we felt that the new design complemented the screen for video playback.
Matte, aluminium covers the faceplate, as with the previous generation of Nanos and now the iPod Classic as well. The back and sides of the Nano, however, mimic the Video iPod's rounded, glossy, smudge-prone chrome cover.
The Nano is minimalist and has three buttons- the clickwheel, the central button and the lock key in the bottom. It is easy to get learn easy enough for newbie’s as there are only two button user’s need to learn, as the clickwheel and the central button basically handles all the functions of the Nano. The central button will access the deeper menus most notably for quick scrolling through music and videos. It will also acts as a quick button for brightness control in video mode.
The menu interface was also redesigned with a spilt screen which separates the menu and the previews of your music or movie. Apple’s coverflow is also a new addition to the Nano, what the coverflow basically does is give a users a preview of their albums by allowing users to flip through their album covers. It is looks great and is somewhat more efficient than looking through dozens of songs in the menu list. The coverflow also suffers from minor lags when scrolling through quickly.
Apple’s estimates the Nano’s battery life lasts for approximately 24 hours on audio playback and five hours on video playback. We thought that this was slightly modest, as testing shown that audio playback lasted over the 24 hour mark and video lasted a little over seven hours.
MultimediaThe iPod Nano is essentially a music player, and according to Apple, it supports AAC, Protected AAC, MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible, Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV.
We tested the Nano with MP3s and we felt that music performance was crisp and clear. Users will have over 20 EQ options to choose from. The maximum volume for this little device is deceptive and will essentially blare at your ears during the few unfortunate times I had accidentally pushed the clickwheel. The Nano performed especially well even without Apple headphones.
When listening to music, users are given the option to rate their tunes, change shuffling and repeat options.
The video option for the Nano was an immediate upgrade for the device-although it only plays MPEG-4, the player will automatically convert it into a playable format. The iPod Nano supports H.264 or MPEG4 video either in MOV, MP4, or M4V file formats, with a maximum resolution of 640x480 at as much as 30 frames per second.
Much to our surprise, the Nano's video performance stole the show. We were highly doubtful that we'd enjoy watching video on a 2-inch screen, yet the Nano's 204ppi screen looked sharp and bright. We enjoyed the experience of watching a full-length movie on the Nano. However, it does an erratic job automatically resuming video playback at the point that you last left off, probably due to the different video formats.
However, testing has shown that the firmware on the Apple is slightly unstable as video scrolling might result in a crash of the video player. The only way to get the player to play again is to reset the Nano.
PIMThe PIM on the Nano includes a clock, calendar, contacts, alarms, games, notes, screen lock and a stopwatch.
The games in the iPod include Klondike and Vortex. Vortex is a 3D version of bouncing balls- it makes use of the wheelscroll the most, which makes for some creative gaming. Klondike is another card game.
But iPod quiz is by far the most distracting and interesting game of the Nano, which is a trivia pop quiz. There are four categories- music, movie and TV trivia. The Nano’s no PSP, but it should provide ample amounts of distraction.
With 8GB, the Nano can be used as a storage device in a pinch.
iTunes The combination between an iPod and Apple's iTunes music software is airtight. Nano users will rely on iTunes from data management to syncing, to deleting data. If this is going to be your first iPod, it's worthwhile to download iTunes to see if it works well on your computer and is easy for you to use. Users should also be aware that most of the music and movies for purchase on the iTunes online store will play only on an authorized iPod and cannot be transferred to a non-Apple MP3 player.
The verdict Apple's new iPod Nano has so far drawn almost universal approval. Although we miss the slender form of the second-generation Nano, we feel the third generation Nano has more going for it than against it-especially with video playback. At RM 899, it’s a bit pricey but we still feel it is a great multimedia player for everyone.
